The natural alternative to polyurethane, Osmo Polyx®-Oils are an interior use Hardwax Oil timber finish. They are clear, durable, low maintenance and food safe. 

Osmo Polyx®-Oils are recommended for finishing interior timber flooring, as well as timber furniture, timber beams, sarking, paneling and childrens cots, bassinets etc. Also recommended for plywood wall linings etc.

Suitable for most timbers. Polyx®-Oil, once fully cured, will not crack, flake, peel, blister or water mark and is stain resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices, milk and water.

Available in 4 sheen levels: Gloss, Satin, Semi-Matt (Low Sheen) and Matt.

As durable as polyurethane, and far easier to repair when scratched or worn. Easy to apply, with 2 thin coats being applied 12 - 24 hours apart. Sanding in between coats is generally not necessary. Application can be by roller or brush, however a good qquality brush is Osmo's recommended applicator. (Osmo's 220mm floor brush with telescopic handle is ideal). If using a roller, make sure the sleeve is micro fibre with a nap of no more than 5mm. Care should be taken to limit the amount of oil held in the roller, otherwise over application can result.

The coverage rate of Polyx®-Oil is exceptional at around 24 square metres per litre. That means a 10 litre can will cover approximately 240 square metres with one coat, or 120 square metres with 2 coats. That equates to a cost of approximately $8.00 per square metre.

Resinous timbers such as Matai, and oily, timbers such as Totara, Kwila, Mahogany, Spotted Gum and Tallow Wood require a different finishing process. Please read the Handy Tip Sheet on this page. The use of Polyx®-Oil, on these timbers may cause drying issues. We reccomend doing a test first to establish suitability, or use one of the following products instead:

  • Woodwax Clear Extra Thin as an initial one coat primer, followed by 1 or 2 coats of the faster drying Polyx®-Oil Rapid. Suitable for both professional and DIY use.
  • 2 coats of Polyx Oil Express with added hardener applied direct to the timber. This is a professional use product only.  

Polyx®-Oil finishes are easy to maintain with any plant based soap such as Osmo's Wash and Care for damp mopping, and Osmo's Liquid Wax Cleaner for buffing the timber when needed.

General

Oils are heavy and expensive to transport around the country - especially across Cook Strait. 

For the most efficient and cheapest shipping, we use Castle Parcels/Post Haste Couriers which is a 2-3 day delivery service throughout NZ (except rural). Freight charges on the web site are based on the weight per package delivered to your door. 

For Auckland and regional (Whangarei to Hamilton) we use NZ Couriers which is an overnight service.

Orders can be collected from Natural Oils' warehouse at 218H Marua Road, Mt Wellington, Auckland. Warehouse hours are variable, but are generally 9:00am - 2:00pm weekdays. Please phone (09) 575 9849 before calling, to ensure the warehouse will be open when you wish to collect.

Delivery Policy

Goods are generally shipped to the buyer on same, or next business day via “Track and Trace” couriers. Courier costs are calculated on the weight, number of packages and destination of the order.

Orders are shipped from Auckland. Delivery can vary depending on location, but is usually 2-3 business days. Rural deliveries will generally take an extra day. Where goods are shipped inter island, the seller cannot be held responsible for delays in transit over Cook Strait. Bad weather can delay ferry sailings and add 1 or 2 days to the normal delivery time.

Shortages, Damages or Loss in Transit

Liability for shortage in the quantity of goods delivered is limited to making up the shortage. Where the buyer believes there is a shortage in the quantity of product delivered, the buyer must notify Natural Oils Ltd of any such claim within 7 days of delivery, and must provide Natural Oils Ltd with a reasonable opportunity to investigate that claim.

Goods leaving Natural Oils' premises are adequately packed. Any loss or damage in transit must be notiified to Natural Oils Ltd who will then lodge a claim against the carrier in the prescribed manner.

No damage claims will be considered after 7 days of receipt of goods.
