More Information

Top Oil is a transparent Hardwax Oil finish for wooden bench tops and joinery, as well as wooden coffee and dining room tables etc. Top Oil does not form a film like a polyurethane, so it cannot crack, flake, peel or blister. Dirt can easily be removed without trace.

Some timbers such as Pine, Spruce and Douglas Fir (Oregon) can contain blue mould in their structure. Where these timbers are being used in wet and humid areas such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, it is recommended using Osmo Wood Protector as a priming coat. The use of Wood Protector will help reduce the blue mould, and its waxy content will assist with waterproofing. Osmo products are not recommended for use on bamboo.

Top Oil Natural contains a small amount of white pigment to help reduce yellowing, and keep the timber looking as natural as possible. Top Oil Natural is more suited for use on light coloured timbers such as oak, macrocarpa, pine, douglas fir etc. On dark timbers such as jarrah, kwila and some rimu, the finish may appear chalky.

Osmo Top Oil is easy to apply. Application can be by bristle brush, microfibre roller, applicator fleece or a lint free cloth such as Osmo's Easy Pad. Generally, 2 thin coats are all that is required when using a brush or roller. If you are using a cloth or Easy Pad, 3 or 4 coats may be required.

Maintain the surface with Osmo's Spray Cleaner which is in a ready to use 500ml trigger pack. For occasional buffing if the surface is dull, use the Liquid Wax Cleaner spray.

Spot repairs to surfaces finished with Top Oil are easy. Just clean and re-treat the worn areas. For areas which are badly worn, a light sand may be needed first.

Drying issues may arise when Top Oil is used on resinous or oily timbers such as Matai, Heart Rimu, Totara or Spotted Gum. Please refer to the downloadable information sheet below for further details.

In all cases a trial test to determine suitability is recommended.
